Notes: This is another song that has been kicking around for a long time. I wrote the first version in 2000 or 2001 and then it sat on a shelf for ten years or so. I dusted it back off for my acoustic band Old State Travelers as my friend and bass player Jeff Severt really loved it and helped breath new life into it.

This song was written for the many strong women in my life. Some of whom have actually bought a ticket and hopped a train and made a better life for themselves and their families.

Lyrics

Mighty Mary, simple and plain
But a ticket, hopped the train
And ran until her money couldn't ride no more
Got off in the closest town
And gathered all her children 'round
Said, "this is where we're gonna make our final stand"

Chorus
It'll be much better than before
Yeah I know, it'll be much better than before

Verse Two
And I never knew a person could be so strong
I've just known a lot of fools that would try to play along
But mighty Mary, she carries her world on her shoulders

Chorus
It'll be much better than before
Yeah I know, it'll be much better than before

Bridge
And I'll find myself driving back down her street again
And that same stupid song will come on the radio
And it'll make me laugh
'Cause she used to sing at the top of her lungs like
Like the world was her own

Verse Three
And it's been a little while since Mary's back in town
The last time I saw her she was in her starry crown
And mighty Mary's hair fell down 'round her shoulders

Chorus
It'll be much better than before
Yeah I know, it'll be much better than before
